A CORRESPONDENT

GAURISAGAR: Sensation prevailed in Sivasagar following the death of a police constable Paramananda Yien allegedly following rigorous punishment meted out to him by Superintendent of Police, Sivasagar Amitabh Sinha on August 21. On August 20, Paramananda Yein, attached to Jaysagar police outpost in Sivasagar, was on his duty when two student leaders barged into the outpost and began taking videos of the interiors and the lock-up. Paramananda prevented them from doing so and reportedly took hold of their mobile to delete the video. The student leaders immediately informed the matter to the SP, Sivasagar. The SP Amitabh Sinha sent Additional SP Bolin Deori to the outpost to enquire the matter. On the basis of his report, the SP served Reserve Close Order on Paramananda and two others including a women constable. It is reported that later the constable had to undergo rigorous punishment of running around huge Sivasagar tank from 5 am to 6 am and again another round of punishment in SP office campus from 10 to 12 am the same day.

The constable fell ill after the punishment. When he reported his condition, he was granted leave for two days but he had to be admitted to Sivasagar Civil Hospital as his condition aggravated on August 27 and later in the night he died in the hospital as reported by Paramananda’s nephew Dandinath Panging on Thursday about the circumstances leading to the death of the police constable of Seshamukh Bhekuri Chapori.

SP Sivasagar Amitabh Sinha told the media that his death is not related to the departmental punishment which was given as par Police manual and the medical report will reveal the actual cause. Paramananda’s wife and daughter Fulesawri Yien and Rinki Yien in an FIR lodged in Sivasagar Police Station alleged that the punishment given to Paramananda by the SP led to his death and they demanded a thorough inquiry and appropriate compensation to the family. President Dibya Khamti and secretary Panchanan Bori of Takam Mising Porin Kebang, Sivasagar district students committee, in a release, demanded an inquiry under a magistrate and legal action against the guilty.
