NABARD Launches Solar-Powered Initiative to Boost Fisheries in Nagaon

NAGAON: NABARD launched its pilot project on "Effectiveness of Solar-based Decentralized Renewable Energy Technologies in Strengthening the Fishery Value Chain" in Chatial, Kaliabor, Nagaon.

The event saw strong participation from local fishermen and fisherwomen, and was attended by important officials, including Co-District Commissioner Ms. Liza Talukdar, ACS, NABARD CGM Shri Loken Das, DDM-NABARD Shri Rajendar Perna, along with representatives from GiZ, Selco Foundation, and Kalong Kapili.

As part of the project, 10 model fisheries will be set up in the Kaliabor block using a convergence approach. This initiative aims to help fish farmers improve both production and processing of fish.

To support them, NABARD provided solar-powered pumps and aerators to boost fish production, as well as solar dryers and freezers to improve fish processing efficiency.

Meanwhile, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma praised NABARD's transformative impact on rural communities in the state during a seminar on Friday. He highlighted NABARD's contributions to rural infrastructure, micro-enterprises, financial inclusion for marginalized groups, and developmental programs over the years.

The Chief Minister also recognized NABARD's support in helping farmers adopt new agricultural technologies, access markets, and improve their quality of life.

During the seminar, NABARD unveiled the 'State Focus Paper-2025-26', outlining its future plans for agriculture, allied sectors, infrastructure, and micro-enterprises in Mizoram. Lalduhoma expressed hope that the paper would provide new ideas and action points for sustainable rural development.
