GAURISAGAR: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) organized a seminar on air pollution awareness in association with Krishak Nyas, a leading NGO of Sivasagar district, and Jhanji Hem Nath Sarmah College on Friday at the Jhanji HNS College auditorium.
The function was inaugurated by Joonmoni Sonowal, District Development Commissioner (DDC), Sivasagar. Addressing the gathering, she appealed to the student community to take initiative for environment preservation and protection.
Participating in the seminar as resource person, Dr Prosanta Hazarika, Assistant Chief Technical Officer, Chemistry and Bio Prospecting Division, Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat said, “We can live about a month without food. We can even live for several days without water. But without air, we cannot live for more than a few minutes.”
Highlighting the effect of air pollution on crops, forests, soil, human health, water and aquatic life, he said that approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths occurring in Asia-Pacific.
Earlier, Dr Manjit Gogoi, Principal of the college, gave the welcome speech. Dr. Akshay Bhat Kesari, District Veterinary Officer (DVO), Sivasagar, graced the meeting as a distinguished guest. A drawing competition was also held among students from Class IV to Class VII.
