Namrup Police arrested AASU leaders on charges of extortion

Two AASU leaders were arrested on charges of extortion. Both the leaders were arrested by Namrup police.

NAMRUP/NAHARKATIA: Two AASU leaders were arrested on charges of extortion. Both the leaders were arrested by Namrup police. According to information received from Namrup Police Station, both the leaders of the Namrup unit of AASU demanded rupees 30 thousand from a fish-carrying vehicle transporting fish from Barhat to Namrup on Sunday.

Both the student leaders forcefully detained the fish-filled vehicle in front of the Namrup AASU office from morning till 3:30 pm because of non-payment of the demanded amount. Fish traders finding no option filed an FIR against both the leaders in Namrup police station. Police arrested both the student leaders on charges of extortion.

Later, the arrested student leaders have been identified as Manas Jyoti Changmai of Dibrugarh district AASU education secretary and Namrup AASU's president (in-charge) Satya Pratim Rajput. The police registered a case (no 153/21) under section 143/341/342/386 of IPC and sent them to jail custody. The arrested District Student Union Education Secretary Manas Jyoti Changmai was earlier suspended from AASU for three months for indulging in unethical activities.
