National Disaster Response force (NDRF) conducts mock drill on earthquake in Barpeta school

GUWAHATI: National Disaster Response force (NDRF) on Friday conducted a joint mock exercise on earthquake emergencies in St. Teresa’s English medium School & Bazar India Mall in Barpeta. The objective of this exercise was to generate awareness amongst the St. Teresa’s English Medium School & Bazar India Mall persons and common people residing in that area. 1st Battalion NDRF took active participation and assisted in planning, co-ordination and played a leading role during the mock drill. NDRF rescuers demonstrated various extrication methods like high rise rescue, stabilizing victims and providing pre-hospital treatment etc following the disaster site safety plan.

On this occasion Santosh Kumar, Assistant Commandant of 1st Bn NDRF said, “Joint mock drill will certainly help remembering the sequence of action to be followed in case of earthquake disaster of a high magnitude. This will also help in updating of response plans and developing inter-departmental co-ordination.” This drill was conducted to apprise everyone on how to perform- Drop, Cover and Hold – a quake-safe action designed to protect lives and prevent injuries from falling and flying objects. The drill incorporated decision-making, response, and life safety aspects, and was very beneficial.

The exercise was conducted in coordination with various agencies. More than 1800 people including students and teaching staff of St. Teresa’s E.M. School, Bazar India Mall Staff, DDMA staff, Assam Police, SDRF, CRPF, SSB, Fire and Emergency Services, health department, Civil defence, volunteers and locals participated in this mock drill, stated a press release.
