SIVASAGAR: Gargaon College hosted a webinar on 'Energy Conservation' on Wednesday to mark the National Energy Conservation Day. The programme aimed to showcase the achievements of our nation in energy efficiency and conservation. This year the theme of the day was 'Energy Transition - Full Speed Ahead', as approved by the Energy Efficiency Bureau, under the Ministry of Energy, Government of India. The event was jointly organized by the Departments of Botany, Geology and Physics of Gargaon College, in association with Assam Science Society, Gargaon Branch and IQAC, Gargaon College.

The workshop was inaugurated by the Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. In his inaugural speech, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta spoke about the need to minimize the usage of energy resources for long term sustainability as well as the need to preserve the eco-system. Furthermore, he spoke about the SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) Goal 7, recognized by the United Nations Organization, whose focus is to ensure access to affordable, renewable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Dr Chandraditya Gogoi, Head and Assistant Professor of Department of Geology, acted as resource person of the programme and delivered an extensive speech on energy conservation.

Dr Chandraditya Gogoi in his deliberation highlighted the importance of energy consumption, its scarcity and impact on sustainability of global eco-systems. He also spoke on the necessity of carbon emission reduction. He added that the motive behind celebrating December 14 as National Energy Conservation Day is to raise awareness among people about global warming, climate change and promote the usage of safe energy resources. Dr Gogoi advocated for the usage of renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, etc. as an alternative to non-renewable energy sources. The programme was moderated by Sangeeta Chetia, Assistant Professor of Botany Department. The webinar concluded with the vote of thanks offered by Dr Gitashri Arandhara, Assistant Professor of Physics Department, Gargaon College.
