National Girl Child Day: Assam CM Sends Greetings

GUWAHATI: On the occasion of National Girl Child Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma greeted all Indian girls. In India, January 24 is designated as National Girl Child Day each year to raise awareness of the injustices that girls suffer in society, as well as to encourage understanding of girls' rights and the value of female education, health, and nutrition.

"Resourceful, diligent, and resilient- girls are jewels of our society. Our Govt has undertaken many initiatives to encourage young girls to pursue their dreams. On #NationalGirlChildDay, I extend my warm greetings to every girl child & wish they excel in their chosen fields," a tweet read by CM Sarma. The purpose of the day is to help Indian girls and give them chances.

The Assam government launched a number of steps to stop the crime after observing an increase in child marriage instances around the state. According to sources, a few decisions were taken by the cabinet which are as follows:

• the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2006 requires all 2,197 Gram Panchayat Secretaries to be designated as "Child Marriage Prevention (Prohibition) Officers" in order to lower infant and maternal mortality rates and prevent child weddings in rural regions.

•When the bride is under 14 years old, there will be reports filed under the POCSO Act, and when the bride is between 14 and 18 years old, they will file a report under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

National Girl Child Day is observed annually on January 24 in an effort to empower girls, according to sources. The district collectors and state nodal officials are to be informed on how to plan activities for five days by the principal secretaries of the states and union territories.

However, according to the sources, Event planning for National Girl Child Day in schools has raised some concerns among child rights advocates. They urge the government to plan the occasion with an emphasis on closing the psychological gap between boys and girls and a focus on making sure that basic facilities are provided at schools in rural areas.
