National Girl Child Day celebrated in Darrang district

MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the countrywide celebration of National Girl Child Day aimed at ensuring safety, security and holistic development of every girl child, the district administration too joined the celebration in the Darrang district on Wednesday.

To mark the celebration, district administration and the women and child development department organized a public function here at the DC's conference hall where Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah ceremonially launched the celebration by lighting an earthen lamp. At the same time, a mass publicity campaign for the scheme 'Beti Bacchao, Beti Parhao' was also launched.

A community oath taking, a signature campaign and felicitation to few selected girl children followed the ceremonial inauguration. In his brief speech, Deputy Commissioner Sarmah laid stress on creating an environment in the district where no girl child is killed while in the mother's womb and where every girl can enjoy holistic development in a safe and secure atmosphere as well.

The function anchored by Mouchumi Kalita of District Women Empowerment Centre, was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Pallavi Kachari, Assistant Commissioners Monika Borgohain and Sristi Singh (IAS on probation), and other dignitaries.

Haflong: In order to give emphasis on the value of the girl child, the unit of Women and Child Development under the department of Social Welfare, Dima Hasao will observe a week-long programme for National Girl Child Day in the district.

As part of the programme, the first day kick started with pledge taking by all the officials followed by a signature campaign held on Wednesday at the office of the Deputy Director of Social Welfare. As per the programme schedule, various activities are to be carried throughout the week such as organizing awareness campaigns at the gram levels, various interactive programmes with the high school and junior colleges involving students etc along with the other stakeholder departments such as Education and Medical departments. The officials further informed that final day of the programme would conclude with a rally at the district headquarters. Public gathering as well as participation from other departments is also expected on the final day of the programme at the District Library Auditorium, Haflong.
