DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Library Association and Assam College Librarians’ Association (ACLA) jointly organized National Librarians’ Day at Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College, Dibrugarh on Saturday. The programme started with lighting of lamp at the portrait of Padmashree Dr. SR Ranganathan, the father of Library Science in India.

The students of Sanskrit Department recited Mangalacharan. Delivering his inaugural speech Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia, Principal, Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College and the president of Dibrugarh Library Association said that a nation can never develop without books.

He regretted that the print media is slowly closing down and the students are becoming more dependent on electronic media. He stressed on the importance of library oriented mindset among the students. Earlier Dr. Pallavi Gogoi Librarian, DHSK College stated the rational of the meeting.

Addressing the meeting as a chief guest Dr. Nagen Saikia, a distinguished litterateur said that with the development of civilization the development of electronic media has diverted the attention of the readers. He stressed that there is no substitute for studying books in the pursuit of knowledge and teachers and librarians have a great responsibility towards developing the reading habit among the students.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief speaker Luhit Deka, Chief Executive Officer, Aakashbani, Dibrugarh and Doordarshan Kendra, said that books or libraries have developed through various stages along with the development of civilization. Libraries are moving forward with new services and facilities in the changing environment.

He urged libraries to use technology, apps etc. to attract the readership. Prakash Gogoi, Former Deputy Librarian, LNB library, Dibrugarh University expressed his views on the enactment of Library Act in Assam. Yadavjyoti Saikia, Librarian, Manohari Devi Kanoi College spoke about the life and works of Padmashree Dr. SR Ranganathan.

In connection to celebration of National Librarians’ Day, various competitions were also held among the students of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts. Five retired librarians were also felicitated on the occasion. At the end of the meeting Dipika Das, Librarian, Dibru College offered vote of thanks.
