MANGALDAI: "The need of the hour is the strong media without any biases to make the Indian democracy more strong as the media is playing an important role in democratic practice. In the changed scenario, more responsibility has been entrusted on the media in discharging their duties as the fourth pillar of the democracy," said newly-joined Deputy Commissioner of Darrang, Pranab Kumar Sarma while taking part in the National Press Day celebration in Darrang district. Darrang district administration and District Information Public Relation Office organized the National Press Day celebration at the conference hall of the DC's office.
Immediately after taking over as the Deputy Commissioner, Pranab Kumar Sarma took part in the function. He also sought the help and cooperation from the members of the media fraternity to keep the district on the faster development track. In the function, Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarma was accorded a hearty welcome with a phulam japi and a phulam Bihuwan.
Senior advocate Jayanta Deka, who is also the second journalism diploma holder of Darrang district, delivered his speech as the appointed speaker in the seminar. In his keynote address on this year's theme of National Press Day, 'Who are not afraid of media', advocate Deka outlined how the sense of the word 'afraid' here is different from the common aspect and said that here fear comes out of respect created from responsible reporting.
The seminar, anchored by DIPRO Ayan Hazarika, was also addressed by veteran academician Dr Budhindra Hazarika, District Development Commissioner Subhalakshmi Deka and senior journalist Bhargab Kr Das. Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarma offered felicitation to media person Bhargab Kumar Das with a phulam japi and a phulam bihuwan for completion of 33 years in journalism in The Sentinel. Additional Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Deka, senior journalist Mukut Raj Sarma, Hemanta Kumar Baruah, Mayukh Goswami and a large number of media persons and leading citizens attended the celebration.
