BISWANATH CHARIALI: Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya, Behali celebrated the National Science Day by organizing various events spanning through three days from February 25 to February 28. The events were organized jointly by the Department of Physics and Chemistry in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college.

On day one, an outreach programme was organized at Mijika High School with an objective to sensitize the school students about the importance of National Science Day and also to enrich their minds through various scientific experiments to inculcate a scientific temperament amongst them. The programme was conducted by the faculties and degree students of Department of Physics and Chemistry and was attended by around 150 students of Mizika HS along with their teachers.

An inaugural address highlighting the objective of the programme was delivered by Arunav Phukan, Head Department of Physics. It was followed by a lecture on National Science Day, 2023 and about CV Raman by Rajesh Mandal, Head Department of Chemistry. It was then succeeded by experimental demonstrations by students and faculties of Chemistry and Physics.

The second day comprised of a popular lecture by Dr A Senorita Devi, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Manipur University and visiting Associate, IUCAA, Pune. This lecture was conducted in online mode and the speaker shed light on the topic ‘Composition of the Universe’. It was followed by the annual quiz event of science day ‘Scientia-2.0’ and an innovative idea competition.

Two popular talks were delivered by Dr Ramesh Chandra Goswami, eminent author and academician and by Dhaneswar Bora, noted academician of Biswanath. They highlighted the works of Sir CV Raman and also on the theme of National Science Day for the year, 2023- ‘Global Science for Global Well Being’ on Tuesday.

Earlier, Principal of the College, Dr Debojit Baruah Raman lit the earthen lamp lamp and delivered the welcome address.

DOOMDOOMA: The 36th National Science Day (NSD) was observed by Assam Science Society (ASS), Doomdooma branch in collaboration with Doomdooma Girls’ HS School on Tuesday with a day-long programme.

In the beginning, floral tributes were paid before the portrait of CV Raman. Thereafter, a meeting was held with president Prabin Mazumdar in the chair. Life-member Runumoni Dutta Bhuyan presented a Jyoti Sangeet while secretary Dhiren Deka delivered a lecturer on the significance of the National Science Day and spoke briefly about the life and achievements of CV Raman.

Earlier, an ‘Innovation and Community Hub’ for CRC-2 was inaugurated by Tinsukia District Circle Inspector of Schools Bitupon Hazarika. After observance of NSD, quiz and art competitions were held amongst the students, which were moderated by Daisy Talukdar. The programme was attended by CRC-2 Committee members Prakash Dutta, Bimala Baruah and Arjun Baruah. Principal Sangeeta Barkataki explained about the activities to be undertaken by the ‘Innovation and the Community Hub’ for development of scientific temper amongst the students.

The National Science Day was also celebrated at Doomdooma College under the auspices of the Science Branch, Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college and Assam Science Society, Rupai Siding Branch. The programme started with a planting of tree saplings and the chief speaker, Dr Rishi Das, former Vice-Principal, Tinsukia College, lit the lamp in front of the portrait of Nobel Laureate CV Raman.

Chief speaker Dr Das in his speech spoke about the significance of National Science Day and elucidated the theme for NSD, 2023: ‘Global science for Gglobal welfare’. The winners of the science-based quiz competition held the previous day were awarded certificates and prizes in the meeting.

TINSUKIA: With an objective to bring the plantation community close to the world of science for empowerment and sustainable development of the community, National Science Day 2023 was celebrated in 9 tea estates (Keyhung, Itakhooli, Dirial, Dirok, Langharjan, Dikom, Hunwal, Deejo, Harmutty, Nonaipara) across four clusters (Tinsukia, Moran, Jorhat and Tezpur) of Assam under Plantation Community Empowerment Programme (PCEP) of Ethical Tea Partnership with support from Aryabhatta Science Centre Block Coordinators.

In Tinsukia Cluster (Keyhung, Itakhooli, Dirial, Dirok and Langharjan) it was a week-long event (February 22 to February 28) with activities like Art, Quiz, Extempore and Model Making held amongst children, youth and workers/non-worker men and women. Dr Gauranga Dhar Baruah, eminent Physicist graced the event at Keyhung Tea Estate and shared his experience to the participants. He also shared his association with Nobel Dr C V Raman.

Tezpur: DRL Tezpur, the only DRDO laboratory in the north-eastern region, celebrated National Science Day 2023 with great enthusiasm.

Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur district, Deba Kumar Mishra graced the occasion as the chief guest. The programme started with the address of the Director, DRL, Dr Dev Vrat Kamboj, who described the significance of the day to the participating students from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Udalguri and Kendriya Vidyalaya-I Tezpur. He emphasized the power of science and called upon the scientific fraternity to come together for the greater cause of science.

In the NSD programme, an oration on a popular science topic was delivered by Prof Pradip Kumar Bora, Director NERIWALM, Tezpur. He stressed the importance of science in day-to-day life and encouraged the students to take up science with enthusiasm to proceed with a child-like curiosity which is the essence of science.

The programme culminated with a speech by the chief guest Deba Kumar Mishra. He encouraged the students to be inquisitive, to seek scientific answers to problems encountered in everyday life and to keep abreast with current affairs through the use of newspapers and traditional learning methods. He also informed the august gathering about the scheme AROHAN of the Assam Government which aims to encourage meritorious students to nurture their scientific thinking.
