National Science Day observed in Assam

LAKHIMPUR: Commemorating India's great scientist Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman and marking the discovery of the 'Raman Effect", National Science Day was celebrated in Lakhimpur district too on Monday along with the rest of the nation in order to raise awareness on the importance of science. This year the theme of the National Science Day is 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future'.

In Lakhimpur, the event was celebrated at Bhogmon village, by the fourth year students of the College of Sericulture, Assam Agricultural University under the Rural Sericultural Work Experience Programme (RSWEP). The due programme on the occasion was organized at the namghar of the village. Scientists from Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), North Lakhimpur, took part in the programme which laid stress on the realization of this year's theme of the National Science Day. The programmes of the event also included an awareness programme with lectures and method demonstrations to diffuse some simple yet efficient scientific techniques among the villagers that had attended the programme. An interactive session among the scientists and the local farmers was also organized on the occasion.

The event was also celebrated at Brilliant Academy of North Lakhimpur under the auspices of Aryabhatta Science Centre under the management of secretary Pradip Gogoi. The programme, organized on this occasion was inaugurated by retired professor Arun Bordoloi. Retired professor of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) Pradip Mitra and Aryabhatta Science Centre former secretary Dhrubajyoti Phukan graced the occasion as resource persons on the theme of the event.

JAMUGURIHAT: The National Science Day was celebrated at Dakhin Nagsankar High School along with the rest of the country to mark the contributions of Sir C V Raman, the legendary scientist of India. Notably, the National Science Day has been observed in India since February 28, 1987.

The Eco-Club of Dakhin Nagsankar High School had organized the day amid various activities. The topic of this year's celebration was 'Integrated Approaches in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future'. The programme began with the lighting of earthen lamps in front of the portrait of CV Raman by Gupta Sarma, a science teacher of the school and was attended by Dr. Sanjib Upadhyay, assistant professor of THB College; a science worker and secretary of Biswanath Chariali branch of Assam Science Society as an appointed speaker.

Dr. Upadhyaya traced the origin of National Science Day during his lecture. He also mentioned various approaches in science and technology for a sustainable future. All the proceedings of the meeting were conducted by Anjan Baskota, convener of the Eco-Club while Ballav Chapagain, headmaster of the school, chaired the meeting. A painting competition was organized among the students prior to the meeting. Reshma Devi, Prabharani Chetry and Mamu Chetry bagged the first, second and third positions respectively. The meeting ended with the distribution of prizes. The meeting was attended by teachers and the students of the meeting.

DIBRUGARH: The Assamese department of DHSK Commerce College here celebrated National Science Day to mark the 'Raman effect' invention by Indian Physicist CV Raman. On this occasion, a special oration on the topic 'Science, Life & Literature' was held. Dr. Gopal Ch. Hazarika, noted science writer and retired professor of Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University delivered the oration, in which he dwelt with the definition as well as importance of science in human life and civilisation and how some quality literature have expressed scientific thoughts beautifully for the readers.

The function was chaired by Dr. K. M. Bhagawati, principal of the institution. Dr. Tanka Prasad Upadhyaya, co-ordinator, 'Internal Quality Assurance Cell'(IQAC) and Dr. Bhupesh Bhagawati, HoD, Department of Commerce delivered brief speeches in the function expressing their pleasure after listening the oration as well as their thirst towards the world of science. A few students also interacted with the speaker regarding the conflicts of different rituals with the principles of science.

Dr. Swapna Nath, HoD, Department of Bengali; Dr. Bidisha Mahanta, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics; Dr. Mintu Das, HoD, Department of Statistics were among others, who graced the occasion.
