GOLAGHAT: A national level webinar titled 'Beat Diabetes through Nutrition' was organized by Grihamalini Forum, Dept. of Home Science in association with IAPEN India (India Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition) on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. Principal Dr. Bipul Chandra Bhuyan inaugurated the webinar. Dr. Ananya Kashyap, HoD, Dept. of Home Science delivered the welcome speech.

During her speech she mentioned the importance of celebrating this day in today's context. According to International Diabetes Foundation, India in 2017 became the second largest country with 73 million diabetic patients after China. This figure is expected to be over 130 million by the year 2045. Since 1991, World Diabetes Day was celebrated on November 14 by WHO along with IDF to aware people regarding diabetes. One of the inventors of insulin Dr Frederick Banting was born on November 14, so every year this day is celebrated in his memory.

In the year 1922 Dr. Banting along with Charles Herbert Best discovered insulin. The theme of this year is 'Access to Diabetes- If not, when?' Resource person Aroti Borah, senior dietician, Barman Diabetes Specialities of Guwahati talked elaborately on practical knowledge a person should have in keeping diabetes under control. Her talk covered everything about food choices i.e. what type of foods to be included or avoided during diabetes. She also mentioned the do's and don'ts of diabetes. Eye check up should be done in every six months to protect retina from damage. She emphasized not go for morning walk empty stomach to avoid hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level). Nomi Mohan, Senior Dietician, Dispur GNRC Hospital and Treasurer of IAPEN India, Guwahati Chapter concluded the session with her vote of thanks the session.
