Nationwide strike called by trade unions & employee federations hits normal life across Assam

DOOMDOOMA: The all India general strike called by more than 10 trade unions and employee federations of India, had total impact at Doomdooma and its adjoining areas like Barhapjan, Talap and Dhola. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere during this dawn-to-dusk bandh. In Doomdooma, the workers of Hindustan Lever PP Factory Workers’ Union brought out a protest rally in the main thoroughfares of the town against the anti-labour and anti-people policies of the government and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

On the other hand, Asam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) also joined the protest and consequently work in all the total 60 tea gardens under its affiliation came to a grinding halt. Another significant aspect of the bandh was that two dance institutions - Dipti Nrityalaya and Nritya Bharati, along with the support of the people, staged protest against CAA through dance performance at Gandhi Chowk.

Bongaigaon: The nationwide strike called by trade unions and federations affected normal life in Bongaigaon on Wednesday. All markets, shops, educational institutions and banks remained closed during the bandh. Ashish Biswas, Assam State secretary of Hind Mazdoor Sabha, said that main demands included stopping price hike, increasing employment in all sectors, fixing minimum daily wage of tea workers at Rs 351, stopping privatization of public sector undertakings and scrapping the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. “We will continue our agitation till our demands fulfilled,” he said. No unwanted incident took place during the strike.

DEMOW: The chakka bandh called by the joint forum of Assam Transport Workers’ Association in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Wednesday hit normal life in Demow.

Buses did not ply on the road and streets were deserted. Though business establishments of Demow remained open on Wednesday, there were not many customers. On the other hand, the nationwide strike on Wednesday called by 10 trade unions across the country, hit banking services banks in Demow and tea gardens also remained closed. The Assam State Power Workers’ Union, Demow Branch also protested and demanded scrapping of CAA.

Biswanath Chariali: The Biswanath Chariali unit under Tezpur division of Assam State Power Workers’ Union staged a 24-hour long general strike on Wednesday along with the rest of the country. The workers protested against the Central Government’s policies such as privatization of public sector industries, implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act against the interest of the people of Assam and removal of lakhs of workers from their jobs without giving their dues and others. They also demanded the governments to stop atrocities upon government workers and to regularize their jobs and pay equal salary following the Supreme Court’s verdict of ‘equal work, equal pay’. The workers also urged to withdraw the new pension scheme.
