Nazira Press Club condemns MLA's misbehaviour, demands protection for journalists

NAZIRA: The Nazira Press Club strongly condemned the insulting behaviour of AK Rashid Alam, MLA from East Goalpara constituency, towards journalist Rajdeep Bailing Baruah. In a resolution passed on July 20, the club expressed its strong opposition to any attempt to belittle or insult journalists while performing their duties.

Nabajyoti Buragohain, secretary of Nazira Press Club, explained the objective of the meeting held under the chairmanship of Bhaskarjyoti Borgohain, criticized the growing trend of politicians using derogatory language and behaving in an uncivil manner with journalists. The club demanded that the government take strict action against those who try to intimidate or insult journalists.

The resolution also condemned the recent incidents of violence and intimidation against journalists, including the attempt to kill journalist Madhurya Saikia in Dhemaji’s Chilapathar and the arrest of Dilwar Hussain Mazumder by the police for performing his duties.

The club appealed to the Congress party’s leadership to take cognizance of the MLA’s behaviour and educate him on the importance of respecting journalists. The meeting also criticized the commercialization of media and the growing trend of talk shows being used to create divisions among journalists.

The resolution supported the Assam Government’s eviction drive against illegal encroachments but emphasized that the government can claim credit for the initiative only if it is carried out without violating human rights.

The meeting was attended by several prominent journalists, including Dhruvajyoti Handique, Syed Khairul Hassen, Dilip Hazarika, Dhruvajyoti Gogoi, Sarif Ali, Pankaj Mahanta, and several prominent figures including Kanak Gogoi, State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Abdur Rahman, ex-Chairman of Nazira Municipality, Anupam Handique, central committee member of the Veer Lachit Sena, apart from many others.

The Nazira Press Club also decided to send a letter to the Chief Minister, urging him to take action against those who insult or intimidate journalists while they are performing their duties.
