GOLAGHAT: The Golaghat district administration has appealed to the people not to panic as the Doyang Hydro Electric Project (DHEP) under NEEPCO Ltd released its excess water on Wednesday.

DIPRO Golaghat said in a press statement that one radial gate had been opened to a height of 0.25 m at RWL 321.50m. The discharge from Spillway radial gate is 5.64 cumecs. The spillway discharge level is 324m but to avoid flash flood, phase wise opening of gates had been done from 321.50m, starting with opening one radial spillway gate by 0.25m initially.

In this context, the Golaghat district administration is constantly in touch with the DHEP authorities and the DHEP management will inform the district administration well ahead of time in case the water is released from the dam. In such a case, the district administration will take all steps to immediately inform all concerned. Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, the district administration has asked the field-level functionaries to stay alert in case of any eventuality.

Notably, on July 9, the NEEPCO authority send a circular to Golaghat district administration citing on opening of radial gates of Doyang Hydro Electrical Plant, NEEPCO located at Wokha, Nagaland. In that letter, the authority of NEEPCO informed that the water level of Doyang Reservoir was rising rapidly during the past few days due to incessant rain in the catchment area. The Doyang Reservoir, operated by the authorities of Doyang Hydro Electric Plant, NEEPCO Ltd, Doyang, was likely to be filled up to the spilling level of El. 324.00 m within a week time.

With the present trend of inflow of river water into Doyang Reservoir, the radial gates of the Doyang Dam should be opened for releasing of excess water in controlled manner even if the reservoir water level did not reach the spilling level of El. 324.00 m. While operating the gates, the excess inflow will spill over and flow through the Doyang River downstream of Doyang Power House.

The district administration has requested people to be careful and stay away from the Doyang River downstream of Doyang Power House and to avoid bathing, swimming and fishing during the period of opening of the radial gates.
