DIGBOI: Pengaree Police has achieved a major breakthrough by busting a robust network of bike lifters from the Penagree Naga Pather area and other locations of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh district on Tuesday morning.

In all, four bike lifters were arrested from different places along with a stolen two-wheeler KTM which was held by locals of the Nagapather area in Pengaree on Tuesday.

The arrested accused have been identified as siblings — Gopal Gogoi and Patul Gogoi (residents of the nearby Tokopather area), Pirit Tanti of no 2 Tokoopather; and Pabitra Gogoi of Avoyapuri in Namrup's under Dibrugarh district.

"Following the arrest of the two siblings earlier in the morning, we could reach out to another accomplice of the network — Pabitra Gogoi and arrested him from his house at Namprup on Tuesday evening," said Margherita SDPO Parth Pratim Das. He added that "more than 50 bikes were stolen from the area so far by the gang and disposed of illegally to parties and customers in the nearby Arunachal districts of Changlang and Namsai besides also in Nagaland.

"The gang's inter-State network is widespread, added the official.

Meanwhile, Pirit Tanti — another molecule of the chain — had escaped the clutches of a furious mob earlier in the afternoon; and was hiding in a tea garden of the Tekeri area. Later, the young SDPO picked him up after he had surrendered late in the evening. He was hiding amidst the thick vegetation cover of the tea garden.

"We are primarily focusing on the recovery aspect of the stolen property. We will keep intensifying our drive to completely neutralize the gang. We are sure of busting their sophisticated network in the days to come," added Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Debajit Deuri .
