New hospital with 500-bed capacity in Silchar Medical College: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: In a step to improve the condition of health care in Silchar and in keeping with the poor state of the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made an announcement of constructing a new hospital. In his announcement made on Monday, the health minister stated that the hospital to be constructed will have a capacity of 500 beds.

As stated by the Health Minister, the proposal of a new hospital has been approved which will hold a capacity of 500-bed. The hospital will be constructed in the Silchar Medical College which will cost Rs 96.05 crore.

The reason for approving a new hospital has also been stated by the minister. He said that the old condition of the hospital and its irreparable state has been kept in mind while approving the new hospital.

The Silchar Medical College and Hospital, being the oldest government-run medical college in the Barak Valley, plays a significant role in the health care industry of the valley. The hospital was founded in 1968 and holds a capacity of 806 beds.

In addition to the approval for the new hospital in Silchar, the health minister has approved three upcoming medical colleges in Kokrajhar, Tinsukia and Nalbari which are to be ready to operate in the next three years. Four more medical colleges are also coming up at Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Nagaon and Diphu and this has been announced that each of these hospitals is to have 500-bed capacity.

Assam, at present, has six medical colleges and these are based in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Tezpur, Jorhat and Barpeta. With the inclusion of the upcoming medical colleges, the state will find it much easier to deal with the health issues and treatment of its patients on time.
