BARPETA: A newborn baby died due to doctor's alleged negligence at the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH), Barpeta.

A pregnant woman named Dharitri Nath (22), wife of Mantu Nath, of Soruharid village under Sarbhog police station in the Barpeta district, was admitted at FAAMCH on July 6. According to the complaint of her husband, the doctor kept her waiting to conduct normal delivery despite her severe pain. Her family repeatedly urged the doctor and the nurses for caeserian operation, but the doctor was allegedly adamant.

The next day, the doctor finally said that they would conduct caeserian operation. Accordingly, operation was done and the woman gave birth to a girl on July 7 at 11 am. Later, the doctor said that the baby's condition was not good, so the baby was taken to the ICU. On July 11 evening, the hospital authority declared that the baby died in the ICU. When the family complained to the Principal of FAAMCH against the negligence of the doctors, he did not respond. Rather, the hospital authority told them to take discharge from the hospital.

Mantu Nath was helpless and approached the Barpeta Press Club on Monday for help. Dharitri Nath was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. They alleged that the hospital authority refused to disclose the name of the doctor who conducted the operation. They also alleged that the behaviour of the staff of FAAMCH was very rude. The hospital allegedly took Rs 1,600 for the operation.
