GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced a new initiative to hire retired staff on a contractual basis to address the shortage of skilled workers. A total of 1,856 positions will be filled under this plan, helping the railway maintain its safety and operational standards.

This opportunity is available to non-gazetted employees who retired from Pay Levels 1 to 9, and they will be re-employed at the same pay level they had at the time of retirement.

The positions will be distributed across different regions, with 101 posts at the Headquarters, 778 in the Tinsukia Division, 606 in the Lumding Division, and 134 in the Dibrugarh Workshop. Key departments such as Engineering, Signal & Telecom, Mechanical, and Operating will benefit from this re-engagement.

A selection committee at each unit, division, or workshop will manage the hiring process. Candidates will need to meet medical fitness standards and have a positive service record from the last five years before their retirement. Employees who were part of the Safety Related Retirement Scheme (LARSGESS) will not be eligible.

The selected candidates will be paid a fixed monthly salary, which will be their last drawn pay minus their basic pension. The engagement will initially last for two years, as per Railway Board guidelines.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) conducted an eviction drive on February 7, 2025, to remove unauthorized encroachments at New Guwahati Complex, Lumding Division.

The operation, involving 20 railway officials and local police, cleared 68 unauthorized quarters. Four individuals were arrested. A separate drive in Maligaon and Pandu evicted 10 illegal occupants.
