TINSUKIA: The NFR Mazdoor Union (NFRMU) has strongly opposed the initiative of private investment by Indian Railways for running of passenger trains that entailed financing, procuring, operation and maintenance of the trains even as majority of trains have been manufactured in India.

As many as 9 pairs of modern trains have been proposed in 9 routes under NFR along with 109 pairs in 12 clusters across the Indian Railway network though these trains will be operated by the drivers and guards of Indian Railways.

In a press release, Pulak Gogoi, central organizational secretary of NFRMU and also convener of Tinsukia division, while announcing a series of agitation to stall the Central Government's move, stated that the All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) on several occasions demanded the government not to go ahead with such detrimental privatization, but the Narendra Modi-led BJP government did not pay any heed to their grievances.

As first phase of agitation, the NFRMU will stage protest on July 9 in all 52 branches under Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangia, Lumding, Maligaon and Tinsukia divisions of NFR under the leadership of Rakhal Das Gupta, general secretary of NFRMU, and also president of AIRF.
