JAMUGURIHAT: The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB), Assam has raised a burning issue pertaining to education system of the State. Advocating for equal standards of education in public and private schools, the government has once again realized the need to standardize examination books. Though NCERT prepares and publishes books of equal quality and value, some private schools on the other hand arrange for the purchase of books from publishers according to their intention and preferences for their own financial gain and force students to purchase them from a particulars shop.

This kind of dishonest practices should be stopped for the greater benefit of students and parents. The NHRCCB advocates establishment of a board to monitor the quality of books. Private schools make books available in a special shop and have to buy books at increased prices. Many times the administration intervenes in this regard but this is not possible due to the strong position of private sector schools. Therefore, it is essential for parents to purchase low cost NCERT books to reduce their expenses. On the other hand, books published by private publishing houses should be distributed free of cost by schools if required in the curriculum. The Right to Education Act makes primary education free and compulsory for children aged 6 to 14 years. But nowadays education has become a business for many. The chairman of the organisation Nishant Thard has sent a letter to the Chief Minister of Assam in this regard, informed Mrnmay Kumar Nath, media officer of NHRCCB, Sonitpur district committee.
