SILCHAR: A team of NIA sleuths arrested a couple from Sonakhira area of Patharkandi in Karimganj on Sunday for alleged link with CPI (M-L).

The Maoist couple has been identified as Raju and Rinki Orang. Recently, Crime branch of Assam Police arrested a veteran Maoist leader, Arun Bhattacharjee, along with Akash Orang, from a tea garden in Udharbond of Cachar. Subsequently, NIA took Bhattacharjee, popular as Kanchan Da, in Maoist circle, in their custody. On the other hand, Akash Orang, a tea tribe youth from Katigorah area was also an active cadre. Sources indicated that on the basis of the confession by Kanchan Da, the NIA team swung into action in Barak Valley once again.

On Sunday morning, the six-member team of NIA along with one lady constable and another policeman form Patharkandi PS, raided the house of Raju Orang at Kalkalighat under Sonakhira GP. After a four-hour long search, the sleuths picked up Raju and his wife Rinki. They were whisked away to Guwahati, the source hinted. A laptop and some documents were also seized from their house. The couple had two minor children.

A local resident informed that Raju Orang was an electric mechanic while Rinki was actively associated with SHG and even she was reportedly the Bank Mitra in the area. Raju's mother Sumita Orang claimed that her son and daughter-in-law had no connection with any illegal activities. Sumita, however, said that three years back, few people came to their home and one of them left the laptop.

Raju's father was an employee of APDCL. He died last year. Another source said that the NIA team raided at least seven places in Barak Valley.
