Silchar: As night landing facility at Kumbhirgram airport was now available, flight between Silchar and Guwahati after the sunset would now begin within next few months, stated Minister Kaushik Rai. Addressing the 124th annual general meeting of the Surma Valley Branch of Indian Tea Association (SVBITA), the Barak Valley Development Department Minister Rai further elaborated various ongoing projects the government had initiated which would play as a game changer in connectivity segment in the landlocked southern Assam. Rai said, the remaining portion of the much awaited East West corridor would be completed by January 2026. The proposed high speed expressway between Barapani and Panchgram would reduce the distance between Silchar and Guwahati to 290 kms enabling just 5 hour journey from Barak Valley to the state capital.
Maintaining that the Himanta Biswa Sarma government had been relentlessly working for the development of the Barak Valley, Rai assured the SVBITA that the 2025-26 state budget would bring good news for the tea sector. The budget would incorporate some clauses to ensure curtailment in the cost of production, he hinted.
IB Ubhadia, the chairman, Atul Rastogi, additional vice chairman of SVBITA highlighted various difficulties the tea sector in the southern Assam had been facing for long time. Even in India, tea production had declined with a decrease of approximately 108 million kgs in 2024 compared to the previous year, Rastogi informed.
