RANGIA: The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati, an Institute of National Importance under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India, launched a One-Year Post Graduate Diploma Course in Medical Devices, commencing from the academic year 2025-26 for the first time in India.

This was announced by Prof (Dr) USN Murty, Director, NIPER Guwahati, in a press meet held on Monday in the auditorium. He said that this new offering aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes strengthening industry-oriented skill development and preparing graduates for real-world challenges.

The course will provide the students, especially those from the North East, the opportunities to explore better academic and research avenues in the field of Medical Devices as the course launches only in NIPER Guwahati amongst other seven NIPERs in India. The Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Devices is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in the design, development, testing, and regulatory aspects of medical devices, he said. The curriculum integrates core concepts such as Medical Imaging, Biomaterials, Biostatistics, Biosensors, Signal Processing, Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, and Regulatory Frameworks. The programme also features intensive hands-on training, including laboratory work in pre-clinical studies, calibration, and device testing, ensuring a practical learning experience alongside theoretical knowledge.

The curriculum combines classroom-based learning with extensive lab-based practical sessions. Students will study subjects focused on engineering principles for medical device design, development and application of biosensors, implementation of Al and signal processing, global regulatory practices, and learning outcomes. Graduates of the programme will be able to apply advanced concepts in imaging, biomaterials, and instrumentation for device development, conduct and analyse bio statistical data for research and development, design biosensors for clinical diagnostics, understand and implement regulatory standards, leverage Al and signal processing to enhance device functionality, and ensure safety and biocompatibility of medical devices in line with international norms.

According to Prof Jagat Chandra Bora, Head, Dept of Medicinal Chemistry, the diploma opens up promising career avenues in the medical device industry, healthcare sector, research organizations, and regulatory bodies. Potential job roles include: Biomedical Engineer, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, Quality Assurance Manager, Product Development Engineer, Medical Device Sales Representative, and Clinical Research Associate & Medical Equipment Specialist.

Admissions will be conducted through an entrance examination which will be in September 2025 at NIPER Guwahati. Depending on application volume, selection may be based solely on a written test or a combination of written test and interview. Detailed admission guidelines will be published soon on the NIPER Guwahati’s official website. The courses will start from October 2025, Prof Bora said.

Applicants must possess any of the following qualifications: BPharm, BDS, MBBS, BVSc, BE or BTech in Biotechnology/ Biomedical/ Biophysics/Electronics/Instrumentation, Mechanical/Biochemical/Health Sciences, or related fields or Four-year BS degrees in Chemistry/Physics/Mathematics & Computing/Programming/Data Science, Postgraduate degrees in Chemical Sciences/Life Sciences/ Material Sciences/Physical, Sciences/Biomedical/Biotechnology/Biophysics/Electronics/Instrumentation/Biochemical/Health Sciences/Medical Science & Technology, or allied disciplines (as applicable for GATE/NET).

There will be only 15 seats in total. Apart from NIPER Guwahati, the faculties will be from AIMS, IIT and other educational institutions. In the press meet, Prof P Radhakrishnand, Head, Dept of Medical Devices, said that the fee structure (for General and OBC students) is Rs 53,142 for one year and for (SC/ST) Rs 43,142 including hostel facilities for both categories.
