'No need to worry': Himanta Biswa Sarma gives update on Tarun Gogoi's health

Congress veteran and three-time former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has recently tested positive for Covid-19 and shifted to a Guwahati hospital

Guwahati: Assam's health, finance, and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi, who has contracted the dreaded COVID-19 virus, is currently doing fine.

"Tarun Gogoi is doing well. There is no need to worry," Himanta Biswa Sarma said, adding that Golaghat's MLA Ajanta Neog of the Congress, who has also been infected with the virus, is also doing well.

Congress veteran and three-time former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has recently tested positive for Covid-19. Stating that he has been diagnosed with the disease, the octogenarian advised all those who had come in contact with him in recent days to undergo the Covid-19 test.

"I have been tested COVID-19 positive yesterday. People who came in contact with me during the last few days should go for Covid test immediately," he tweeted.

Two other MLAs, however, had reached a critical stage at one point, divulged Sarma. "Bhaben Bharali and Kamal Singh Narzary had both turned critical. Although Narzay's condition has stabilized, Bharali is still not showing much improvement," Sarma said, adding that all the other political figures infected with the virus are doing well.

Minister Sum Ronghang tests COVID-19 positive:

In another COVID-19-related development, Assam hills area development minister Sum Ronghang has tested positive for the contagion on Saturday, thereby becoming the first minister in the state to have contracted the virus.

As per reports in the media, Ronghang is being treated in the intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a private hospital in Guwahati city.

Meanwhile, Haflong's MLA Bhadra Hagjer has also tested positive for the virus.

So far, 26 politicians from Assam have been infected with the coronavirus. This includes one minister, 20 MLAs, and 2 Members of Parliament.

Assam COVID-19 Update:

Assam crossed the one lakh coronavirus cases mark on Friday, with 2,560 new infections detected within 24 hours. Close to 300 fatalities have been attributed to the virus so far, with eight of those deaths reported yesterday.

Of the state's 1,01,367 Covid cases, 21,771 are active cases, while nearly 80,000 have been discharged from hospitals and medical facilities after receiving treatment.
