DIBRUGARH: In order to avert major fire catastrophe, no trucks are allowed to park in any petrol pump premises in the district. Serving a strict instruction to all concerned, Deputy Commissioner Biswajeet Pegu who is also the chairman of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) had asked the DTO to take all administrative measures immediately in implementing the order.
"Necessary instruction to this effect should be served to all petrol pumps by DTO that no petrol pump would allow any truck to park in its campus and use LPG cylinder or kerosene gas stoves for preparing their meals except filling of fuel. Penal action under Disaster Management Act 2005 will be taken against violators of the order," Pegu said while presiding over the DRSC meeting held recently at DC conference Hall. The meeting was attended by all the members including ADC, Sanghamitra Baruah, DTO, Sanjeev Hazarika, Traffic Inspector, Mrigen Saikia, Officer in-charge of Dibrugarh P.S. Raju Chetry and Addl SP Bitul Chetia.
During the discussion, the members expressed their serious concern about traffic congestion in the town and suggested various measures like making one way at some of the major roads of the town, forming a zone absolutely for vendors, systematic parking of the vehicles etc. to minimize the problems. However, after a threadbare discussion, the meeting resolved to survey the ground situation prior to taking any steps to this effect. The meeting directed the DTO to make all arrangements for making the survey a success. The survey team comprised of ADC Baruah, Traffic Personnel, and members from PWD, NHIDCL, and other members of DRSC . The date of the survey has been fixed on July 27.
Joint survey will also earmark some places in Dibrugarh town as designated stoppage of public transport besides Jalan Bus Terminus in the interest of smooth movement of all modes of vehicles and safety of passers-by.
The members also discussed increasing number of road accidents and suggested several measures in order to prevent accidents. The DC asked the DTO as well as traffic police that steps should be initiated to prevent truckers from parking in the highway except designated parking sites.
The new DRSC committee has been formed at par with the norms enshrined by the Supreme Court of India with an inclusion of a new member Ratan Hazarika, from an NGO.
