Guwahati: Popular Assamese singer Neel Akash today rubbished reports that he is going to join active politics ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls and follow in the footsteps of scores of popular artists in the state who have joined political units in the lead up to the polls.

Akash, addressing the people via a 'Facebook live' earlier in the day, alleged that some people with vested interests have spread such rumours in order to tarnish his image 8 months before Assam heads to the polls once again.

"A piece of fake news is going viral in certain sections of the media as per which I was to join a particular political party at 11 am in the morning today. This is completely false and I find this utterly laughable", Akash clarified in a video that he posted on Facebook. Neel Akash in his video post further added that he is "aggrieved" at this development and lashed out at the rumour mongers.

"I am an Oil India Limited employee. I am residing in Moran, upper Assam. I do not have any intension to join a political party. Some people have spread rumours in a bid to malign my image," Akash further stated.

Akash's clarification was made after a section of media reported that the singer is all set to join a political party. Notably, a large number of singers, actors and actresses, and other artists in the state recently joined either the ruling BJP or the opposition Congress in much-publicized public events.

On Tuesday, as many as 40 artistes, including popular singers, musicians, and film personalities, joined the Grand Old Party in Guwahati, while 28 went with the ruling BJP.

Vocalist Babu Baruah, music composer Ajoy Phukan, and 38 other fellow artistes joined the Congress in the presence of the party chief Ripun Bora and state in-charge Harish Rawat. Channelling anti Citizenship (Amendment) Act sentiments, the newly added members also released a song, CAA Namanu (We won't agree with CAA), at the event.

Singer Simanta Shekhar, flautist Deepak Sarma and actors Pranjit Das, Reba Phukan, and Pranjana Dutta are among the prominent names who joined the saffron brigade in the presence of the state party chief Ranjit Das at the party's state headquarters in Hengrabari.
