Noted Bodo litterateur Guneswar Mashahary passes away in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: Noted Bodo litterateur, Sahitya Akademi award winner and educationist Guneswar Mashahary, who was the Principal of Gossaigaon B.Ed College, passed away on Thursday night at 10 pm due to ill health.

Mashahary, who was born on January 18, 1947 at Bollamguri village of Gossaigaon, leaves behind four children and a host of relatives. He was deeply associated with the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) and other democratic organizations. He had a number of books to his credit, besides he took responsibility as chief editor of Bodo monthly, weekly news magazines, including the annual mouthpiece of the BSS.

Mashahary started his early education at Malaguri MV School and passed the matriculation examination in 1965. He completed BA from Kokrajhar College in 1970 and MA from Gauhati University in 1988. He passed BT from Kokrajhar Government CTE in 1974 and worked as Lecturer of Gossaigaon College from 1988 to 1993. He worked as senior lecturer at Kokrajhar DIET from 1990 to 2006. Subsequently, he became the Principal of Gossaigaon BEd College from 1995 to 2000.

Mashahary had written five books of poems and six prose, including a novel since 1981 to 2012. He received the Sameswari Award from the BSS in 2009, Sahitya Akademi Award in 2012 and Promod Chandra Brahma Literary Award from BTC in 2015. He also received Literary Pension since 2010. The BSS, ABSU, ABWWF, DBHA and other organizations expressed deep shock over his demise and said that society had lost a great literary figure. The BSS hoisted the organizational flag at half-mast.
