TEZPUR: Noted social worker, outstanding women activist and retired teacher Swarna Prabha Saikia passed away on Monday night at her Gharporachuburi residence in Tezpur following prolonged illness. She was 83. She leaves behind her son, senior journalist and secretary of Sonitpur Journalist Union, Monoj Saikia, three daughters and a host of relatives.

Sonitpur Press Club, Baan Theater, Bahbari Usha Natya Samaj, Tezpur Xahitya Xabha and members of various cultural groups and organizations mourned and paid rich tribute to her. She strived to empower women in society. She was associated with several social organizations of the locality. Her cremation took place at Bahbari village.

In her condolence message, president of Bhoomi, Momi Kalita said that Swarna Prabha Saikia's contribution to the growth of Assamese society in the greater Tezpur and Bahbari area would be remembered for generations to come. She was not only a social worker but also a very amiable woman and the contribution she had made in the field of social and culture was truly outstanding and unforgettable.
