Notorious criminal Asha Babu Islam killed in police firing while trying to flee in Mangaldai

MANGALDAI: Asha Babu Islam (45) - a notorious absconding criminal involved in a series of robberies in different places of the State as well as in Kerala, and the prime accused in the sensation killing of eminent lawyer and president of Mangaldai Bar Association Binoy Kumar Ghosh way back in 2014 in the heart of Mangaldai town - was killed in an encounter with the police on Tuesday midnight.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Darrang Police on Tuesday night had arrested the absconding criminal from his house at village Bihudiya near Kharupetia town. After his arrest, he led the police team to the recovery of arms which he had kept concealed on the bank of River Dhansiri near Koupati under Dalgaon Police Station and on reaching the area, he dug out a pistol of 7.65 mm and all of a sudden opened fire at the police and tried to flee away. Finding no alternative, the police team was compelled to retaliate to his firing and in the process he sustained severe injuries. The police immediately shifted him to Mangaldai Civil Hospital but he succumbed to his injuries.

Besides, his involvement in the gruesome killing of lawyer Binoy Kumar Ghosh, earlier he committed robbery in a jewelry shop in Kerala and fled away with 1,250 gram gold which he later sold in Assam at Rs. 3 lakh. The Kerala Police, with the help of Darrang Police, had also arrested him and took him to Kerala for his trial. He was involved in Kharupetia PS case No. 308/18 u/s 366/ 34 IPC, Kharupetia PS case No. 235/21 u/s 379/511/34 IPC, Kharupetia PS Case No. 270/18 u/s 307/302/498/494 IPC, Dhula PS case No. 309/19 u/s 25 (i)(a) of Arms Act, Mangaldai PS Case No. 598/14 u/s 460/396/ IPC read with 25 (i)(a) Arms Act/ 399/411 IPC, Hatigorh PS (Guwahati) Case No.640/18 u/s 395 IPC and in Mangaldai PS Case No. 1149/18 u/s 457/380 IPC.

Significantly, Asha Babu also committed several crimes even after his release from jail on bail. Of late, he had become a drug addict and was involved in peddling of drugs in different corners of the district.
