NRC Seva Kendra in Guwahati vandalized by miscreants, police investigation ordered

Guwahati: At a time when the NRC issue has been creating quite a buzz as the Supreme Court has finally given a deadline to the NRC final draft release to August 31, an incident of an NRC office being vandalized in the city has caught the eyes. Reportedly, the incident has taken place in Narengi as an NRC Seva Kendra located at the Narengi LP School is found to be damaged by some unknown miscreants.

This is to be noted that some of the important documents are being destroyed by the miscreants and the incident has taken place in the late hours of July 30.

NRC officials state that the miscreants had come in a group who broke into the Seva Kendra by breaking the entrance door of the centre. On entering the room, they vandalized the important documents stored inside the safety trunks. There has been reports of the group damaging the files and papers while also leaving them scattered on the ground.

Not only this, one of the miscreants is found to have used the official laptop as well.

On being informed about the incident, a team of police arrived at the NRC Kendra and further investigations are being conducted into the matter. Deputy Commissioner of Police has taken stock of the situation.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had extended the deadline to publish the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list to August 31. The SC verdict came following the requests and pleads made by the centre and the NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela. The government had stated that completing the NRC within the previously framed deadline of 31 July would not be possible and it would need some more time to tweak the processes for inclusion of names in the list.

However, while extending the deadline of NRC final list, the centre and state government’s plea to seek 20 per cent sample verification for finding out wrongful inclusions or exclusions in the NRC was rejected by the Apex court. The court dismissed the plea on this basis that NRC coordinator told the top court that there was no need for further re-verification as over 72 lakh people had been re-verified already.
