NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates’ quota in MBBS and BDS courses opposed

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has opposed the NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates’ quota in MBBS and BDS courses in the medical colleges in Assam and demanded to withdraw it immediately.

Notably, the Government of Assam already framed rules for NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates’ quota in MBBS and BDS courses in the medical colleges in Assam, reserving seven percent of the total of the remaining MBBS seats after excluding 15 percent of the all-India quota, the Central Pool, the North Eastern States quota, the Royal Government of Bhutan quota, etc. This is compared to the State Cabinet’s June 15, 2023 proposal of 10 percent reservation of the remaining MBBS/BDS seats for NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates after the deduction of 15 percent all-India quota, Central Pool, North Eastern States’ quota, Royal Government of Bhutan quota, etc. The government framed the rules and amended the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam (Regulations of Admission into 1st Year MBBS or BDS Courses) Rules, 2017, and framed its amended version for 2023. According to the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam (Regulations of Admission into 1st Year MBBS or BDS Courses) Rules, 2023, NRI or NRI-sponsored candidates shall have to qualify the NEET undergraduate examination of the same session.

Opposing this reservation, Lakhimpur district unit of the AJYCP alleged that a section of dishonest guardians has planned to purchase MBBS seats in the medical colleges of the State by taking advantage of the reservation system. According to the organization, this reservation is injustice to the meritorious students of Assam. On Monday, Lakhimpur district unit of the AJYCP submitted a memorandum, signed by president Hiranya Dutta and general secretary Diganta Bhuyan, to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in support of the demand for withdrawal of the NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates’ quota in MBBS and BDS courses in the medical colleges in Assam.
