BOKAKHAT: Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) was established on April 22, 1993, under the historic Assam Accord signed on August 15, 1985. The refinery was set up with the objective of contributing to the economic development of Assam and the Northeastern region.
Today, its 33rd Foundation Day was celebrated at the refinery’s offices in New Delhi, Numaligarh, Guwahati, and Siliguri. Pledge ceremonies were held at all four locations, and the flag was hoisted at the New Delhi office by Director (Operations) Bhaskar Jyoti Phukan.
The refinery, with a capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), was dedicated to the nation by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on July 9, 1999. Since beginning commercial production in October 2000, NRL has consistently demonstrated remarkable success. In particular, it has secured a strong position not only in India but also in the global market for the production of paraffin wax.
NRL is currently undertaking a major expansion project to triple its refining capacity from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA, with an estimated investment exceeding Rs 28,000 crore. As part of this project, a crude oil import terminal is being established at Paradip Port in Odisha, and a 1,640-kilometer-long crude oil pipeline is being constructed to transport imported crude oil to Numaligarh. The project is progressing with the goal of completion by December 2025.
NRL’s current authorized capital stands at Rs 5,000 crore, with a paid-up capital of Rs 735.63 crore. The refinery continues to play a vital role in the social and economic development of Assam and the Northeastern region. One of its key initiatives is a bio-ethanol project.
