Jaya Bharali, former Head of the Department of Zoology of Tinsukia College, passed away after a brief illness in a private nursing home at Dibrugarh on September 21. She was 73. A well-known and popular biology teacher in Tinsukia district, Bharali was pioneer in developing teaching modules and skills that facilitated easy understanding of the subject. She joined Tinsukia College in 1971 and superannuated on January 31, 2006. A prolific writer, she contributed articles of varied nature, including feminist issues and wildlife, in journals and periodicals. She was the editor of the State-level children magazine Jangphai, besides acted as resource person in teachers' training programmes. Her demise was deeply mourned by the teaching fraternity of Tinsukia College and they observed a minute of silence as her mortal remains were brought to the college for last respect. Various organizations and individuals, including Dr JRB Alfred, former director of ZSI Kolkata, expressed condolences at her demise. Her husband Gunin Hazarika had predeceased her.
