OIL carries out CSR activities along with capping of gas well blowout

DOOMDOOMA: Biswajit Roy, Director (HR&BD), OIL, along with Prasanta Borkakoty, ED (HR&A), OIL and Ashok Das, ED (HR&BD), Corporate Office, OIL, interacted with the patients from Baghjan relief camps who were admitted in OIL Hospital at Duliajan for availing treatment for routine ailments, including pregnant cases. Eleven patients were admitted out of whom three were discharged on Wednesday.

As part of health awareness programme, the Anganwadi workers and helpers organized exercise and yoga sessions for the children in relief camps at Baghjan. To keep people informed about the progress in capping the blowout gas well at Baghjan and related activities, a radio bulletin called 'Baghjan Barta' is being broadcast by All India Radio (AIR), Dibrugarh every day at 7:10 pm and repeat broadcast next day at 7:30 am. Moreover, Environmental Impact Assessment, regular monitoring of air quality, water quality, noise level and presence of gas (lower explosive limit) was also carried out by OIL at the well site.

Environment Impact Assessment study is in progress by M/s ERM India Pvt. Limited, a NABET accredited consultant, to carry out the environment and ecological survey within the vicinity of BGN#5, including Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and Maguri–Motapung Beel. Preliminary assessment undertaken by TERI team was in progress at site for studying air quality and noise level monitoring around Baghjan BGR 5. More importantly, TERI team was also engaged in carrying out preliminary assessment of bioremediation of sludge in OIL's installations using technology in-house by R&D Department of OIL. This was demanded by AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi when he visited the relief camps at Baghjan on Tuesday.

Study using seismological technique on tremor report from the neighbouring areas was also conducted by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – North East Institute of Science & Technology(CSIR- NEIST), Jorhat facilitated by the Government of Assam. In the meanwhile, arrangements were being made for seismologists to come to site with requisite equipment. Besides these, preliminary assessment on vegetation impact survey on plants and tea gardens was conducted by Assam Agricultural University. They were further requested to start post fire damage assessment study to assess the damage to the crops/tree/plants in surrounding area of Baghjan.

As regards progress of preparation for capping the well, in a press release issued by OIL it was stated that nine trucks loaded with materials for Bailey Bridge mobilized from 3 Corps Indian Army, Misamari, Tezpur were in transit. Two more trucks were being loaded and six more trucks would be loaded with remaining materials for the bridge and would depart for Baghjan.

Fire fabrication job was also in progress at OIL's Engineering Workshop. Erection job of heat shield in front of both the CMT pump stations in the well site has been completed. Testing of both high-discharge water pumps was completed at the site. Civil work was in progress for development of debris laydown and kill pump area. Testing of additional water pump at Dangori River bank pump station has also been completed.
