DIGBOI: With a view to redress the grievances of the media persons and raise the standard of reporting for greater interest of Digboi and its adjoining areas, a new press body named Digboi Journalist Union was constituted here on Friday evening .

The consensus decision to create a new platform for the reporters was reached during a general meeting of the media persons organized formally with senior reporter Binanda Konwar in the Chair.

Accordingly, an effective committee comprising of an 11-member team of working journalists was formed in the meeting for the effective administration of the union's affairs. Binanda Konwar was unanimously selected as the president of the new press club while Rajesh Upadhaya will be the general secretary.

Laxman Sharma, Rina Kakoty Gogoi and Hira Phukan were selected as the vice-president, assistant general secretary and working president of the committee respectively. Bijoy Sutradhar will look after the financial administration of the union.

"Unless we stand together, day-to-day issues and grievances of the working media persons cannot be resolved effectively," said Binanda Konwar while appreciating the immediate need of a new journalists' union in Digboi.

Similarly, while underlining the growing trend of paid news, fake, concocted and unverified reporting, Laxman Sharma urged for solidarity among the media persons in Digboi.

The union will soon draw up its agenda of activities during the first executive meeting slated next week.
