One arrested under POCSO Act in Demow after minor girl found pregnant

DEMOW: One Lachit Kurmi (20 years), resident of 2 No. Line Athabari TE, was arrested by police under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Tuesday.

Dr Bikash Ranjan Konwar, District Child Protection Officer, Sivasagar, had lodged an FIR in Demow police station on July 22 regarding a matter related to the pregnancy of a minor girl child. In the FIR, Dr Konwar stated that the minor girl child (16 years) was in a relationship with Lachit Kurmi. According to the FIR, the girl eloped with Kurmi a week ago. Since both the families knew about that, this may have been regarded as case of Child Marriage under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA) 2006.

However, the girl is pregnant and thus a victim under POCSO Act 2012, the FIR states. Based on the FIR, the Demow police started an investigation and arrested the accused Lachit Kurmi under the POCSO Act.
