LAKHIMPUR: One more person succumbed to COVID-19 in Lakhimpur on Tuesday. He has been identified as Kumud Borah, resident of Jatrabari under Dhalpur area of the district. He was an 85-years old person who breathed his last while under home isolation.

On the other hand, the rate of novel coronavirus infection has increased at various parts under the district worsening the overall situation. A total of 119 fresh COVID-19 cases were detected in Lakhimpur on Tuesday. On this day, a total of 1,860 people underwent the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted by the District Health Department in eight COVID-19 Test Centres set up across the district, including North Lakhimpur Urban Hospital, Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital Respiratory Clinic and other Block Primary Health Centers (BPHCs). Out of them, the detected cases were reported from North Lakhimpur Urban Hospital (1), Dhalpur BPHC (15), Bihpuriya BPHC (4), Naoboicha BPHC (5), Boginadi BPHC (18), Ghilamora BPHC (3), Dhakuakhana BPHC (58) and Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital Respiratory Clinic (11).

Notably, altogether 51 COVID-19 cases, out of 58 cases reported from Dhakuakhana BPHC on the day, alone were detected in Madhupur Tea Estate, located in the subdivision, causing an alarming threat to the human health of the neighbouring areas. The tea estate has turned to be a hotspot COVID-19 contagion in the subdivision of late. The COVID-19 protocol has been allegedly flouted in the tea estate due to which community contagion of the dreaded novel coronavirus has hit the workers of the tea estate and the nearest areas. Moreover, alleged dereliction on the part of the tea estate authority towards adopting due measures to prevent the pandemic has play the role of catalyst in spreading the contagion. In this regard, a detailed report was published in May 10 issue of The Sentinel. However, in view of the detection of a number of COVID-19 cases, Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur-cum-District Magistrate, Khageswar Pegu declared the tea estate as containment zone on May 9 in order to arrest the spread of the pandemic and to break the chain of the contagion in the interest of the public health.

With the 119 fresh patients detected on Tuesday, the cumulative total of COVID-19 cases of the district has surged to 10,066 since April 4 of the last year. Out of them, 9,173 recovered patients have been discharged from hospitals and home isolation while there are 813 active cases in the district at present. On Tuesday, 19 recovered patients were discharged from institutional isolation while 97 recovered patients were discharged from home isolation. A total of 2,021 people of the district tested positive for COVID-19 during the second wave of the contagion since April 1 of the current year till date.

On the other hand, in view of the detection of 11 of COVID-19 cases at Majigaon village under Ghilamora Police Station under Subansiri Revenue Circle and 14 COVID-19 patients at Padumoni Kekuri village under Boginadi Police Station under Kadam Revenue Circle on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Khageswar Pegu has declared both villages as micro containment zones. By declaring the two villages as containment zone under Section 3(b), (c), (h) and (m) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Deputy Commissioner has restricted the exit and entry of the people in and out of the containment zones. During the containment period, the staff for providing food and other essential services to people is allowed. The designated staff will have to be allowed to enter inside the containment zone only after wearing of full PPE.
