One-year-old rhino baby separated from mother rescued at Kaziranga

Guwahati: The devastation of flood in Assam has wreaked havoc in the lives of both humans and animals. The plight of the animals of the badly-hit Kaziranga National Park, especially has been the cause of much national debate and discussion.

Rescue efforts at the National Park, home to the endangered one-horned rhino have also been kickstarted by officals in earnest. In what can be taken as a positive sign amidst the chaos of floods, a one-year-old baby rhinoceros that was separated from its mother in the Agartoli range of the park was rescued on Wednesday morning by team of Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) along with Kaziranga staff.

The female calf has now been placed under care at the CWRC rescue centre where she is now "stable" and under constant observation of the officials. The rescue team have been unable to locate the mother, however.

Meanwhile, the rescue of the female rhino has been seen as a major triumph by the park officials who have had little to cheer for since the onset of the floods.

The official Twitter account of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve uploaded a video of the animal's rescue along with the caption, "A female rhino calf was separated from her mother due to high flood in the Agartoli range yesterday. As we could not locate the mother, team CWRC along with@kaziranga_ staffs rescued it and currently under care at our rescue centre-CWRC."

In the video that is now going viral on social media, the baby rhino can be seen being loaded onto a boat by officials, while locals gather round to pat it on its silvery back

Forest personnel have so far rescued 117 animals, including the one-year-old female rhino calf, which had got separated from its mother to date.
