Online initiatives undertaken for students in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The nationwide lockdown initiated to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closure of educational institutions has interrupted students’ learning. A recent study done worldwide has shown that the impact of the current school closure for 12 weeks, that is 60 school days, implies a loss of 6 per cent of a standard deviation, which is non-trivial.

The closure of schools, colleges and universities has not only interrupted the learning process of students across the State but many exams have been postponed or cancelled. In higher education, many universities and colleges are replacing traditional exams with online assessment tools. The career of this year’s college and university-level students may also be severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to address these unexpected problems caused by the pandemic, the Lakhimpur District Education Department has come up with some policies in order to carry on the teaching-learning activities for the benefit of the students community during the lockdown period. In this regard, while inquired, Lakhimpur District Inspector of Schools, Mridul Kumar Nath informed The Sentinel that various activities had been carried out in the district in order to continue the learning opportunities of students during the lockdown period.

“Classwise WhatsApp groups have been created with teachers and parents for providing reading materials to the students. The students or parents, who have no smart phones are provided due instructions through general keypad phones. On the other hand, students are advised to listen to the academic radio programmes which are broadcast by All India Radio, Guwahati and Dibrugarh on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This can be accessed through general Radio App and All India Radio App. The recordings of these broadcast radio programme content are also provided to the students through the official WhatsApp groups of the Lakhimpur Education Department,” said the Inspector of Schools.

He further informed that the secondary-level students were advised to watch the live telecast of classroom activities through DD Assam on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday every week from 10.00 am onwards and through News 18 Assam from 11.30 am to 12.00 pm.

“One YouTube channel has also been developed for the secondary-level students and it can be easily accessed by the teachers and students. The academic contents, instructions and demonstrations are made available through DIKSHA, a mobile app developed by State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Assam,” he added.

As per information from the Inspector of the Schools, a total of 2,610 LP level students and 2,639 secondary-level students of the district are covered with official WhatsApp groups with the facilities of YouTube channel, DIKSHA and other academic apps while study materials and due instructions are given to a total of 10,892 LP level students and 5,498 secondary-level students. On the other hand, 21,624 LP level students and 6,658 secondary-level students are using radio for learning while 2,552 LP level students and 2,480 secondary-level students are using television.
