SIVASAGAR: Sibsagar Commerce College observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Thursday with an awareness session organized by the Department of Accountancy and Finance.
The programme, moderated by Malin Timungpi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Accountancy and Finance, commenced with an inaugural address by the Principal of the college, Dr Saumar Jyoti Mahanta. In his remarks, Dr Mahanta highlighted the adverse impact of drug abuse on the younger generation and emphasized the importance of transforming one’s mindset as a means to effectively combat this growing menace.
The session was graced by Lipika Baruah, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sivasagar district, as chief guest. Addressing the students, she explained how drugs are often introduced among the youth, how addiction develops, and how it can ultimately destroy an entire generation. She stressed that it is the youth alone who possessed the strength and responsibility to rise against the misuse and spread of drugs in society.
Manasjyoti Gogoi, who attended the event as a resource person, shared insights with the students on how managing one’s emotions, choosing the right company, and practicing self-discipline can help individuals free themselves from the grip of drug addiction.
The awareness programme witnessed the participation of over 200 students and was also attended by faculty members from various departments of the college.
