Orang Police Identified Slain Poacher From Nagaland

MANGALDAI: The unidentified poacher who was killed in an encounter with the joint team of police and forest in Orang National Park (ONP) on the wee hours of September 28 has finally been identified. He has been identified as one Reuben Rongmai (40), son of Khungdunnang of village Nidlang Colony under Jalukie Police Station of Peren district in Nagaland. The Officer in-charge of Jalukie Police Station, Inspector Logubu has confirmed the identity of the slain poacher.

On the basis of a specific input regarding attempt by an organized armed gang of rhino poachers to enter the park, a joint operation between police and forest officials led by in-charge of Silbori Police Outpost, Sub-Inspector NA Choudhury was launched on the early hours of that day. As the organized gang of the armed poachers started firing, the joint team immediately retaliated and the cross-firing lasted for around 25 minutes.

Later, an unidentified person with bullet injuries (along with a modified rifle with five rounds of ammunition) was found lying within the park. He was immediately shifted to Kharupetia CHC for treatment where he was declared dead. Other members of the gang of poachers, however, fled away taking the advantage of darkness.
