BISWANATH CHARIALI: Several organizations of Biswanath Chariali have urged the government to resume the inland water transport system at Biswanath Ghat, around 20 km away from here.

The system had prevailed during the British era and this mode of transport made significant strides in the field of commerce, starting with travel. After India achieved independence, it was introduced in 1958 again. Regular ferry services began in 1970 from Biswanath Ghat to Shilghat, Nagaon but it was stopped by the Government of Assam in 1971.

The organizations, including Biswanath Chariali Nagarik Santha and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), submitted separate memoranda to the Director of Assam Inland Water Transport Department and Deputy Commissioner, Biswanath recently and demanded to initiate necessary steps in this respect.

They opined that the resumption of this water transport system would make Bishwana Ghat a business hub since the sixth extension of the Kaziranga National Park included the Bishwanath Ghat area.

This will be a new addition to the tourism map of Assam and a new path of employment will be opened for the local youths, they added.
