DIBRUGARH: A short-term Orientation Programme was organized for the students of the Post-Graduate Diploma course on Tea Production and Smart Management by Bal Sakha, Assam in collaboration with Department of Tea Husbandry and Technology, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat recently.

Dr. Mridul Kumar Deka, Head, Department of Tea Husbandry and Technology, AAU, Jorhat inaugurated the programme. Dr Deka in his inaugural speech briefed that since 1968, the department had provided significant contribution towards the tea industry by creating executive cadres. In the present day context there is variability in the process of management in the tea Industry and thus, management of the resources has become an essential aspect. Dr Deka stated that this workshop would assist and encourage the participants in establishment of socially conscious tea management for holistic development of the tea community.

The programme began with a discussion on 'History and Development of Tea Garden Industry in Assam' by Dr. Aditya Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary Bal Sakha Assam. This was followed by the sessions on various relevant topics such as 'Present day management system in tea estate: changing paradigm of managerial practices in tea estates of Assam' by Dr. Partha Ganguli, Associate Professor of Department of Economics, DHSK College. Dr. Ganguli also discussed the schemes available for the welfare of the tea community. He highlighted the need of humanitarian approach for the all-around development in the tea industry. Dr. Madumita Purkayastha, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English, DHSK College, discussed the topic 'The Concept of Gender, Gender Equality and Equity, Gender Sensitization and Gender Friendly Policies in Tea Estates'.
