SILCHAR: The stringent crackdown by the Assam Police against the illegal transportation and sale of Burmese beetle nuts had let to the seizure of a large quantity of this product from different vehicles.

Manoj Baruah of the Dholai Police Station in Assam’s Cachar led a campaign on Thursday in the region that led to the confiscation of more than 2500 kilos of the product in a naka check post. A total of four vehicles were intercepted by the police personnel. Eight people were also apprehended in connection to the captured illegal products.

One auto-rickshaw bearing registration number AS-10-C-5721 which was intercepted at the checking was found carrying nearly 200 kilos of suspected Burmese areca nuts. Jamil Hussain Borbhuiya ( aged 19 years) and son of Moin Uddin Borbhuiya and Sabil Hussain Borbhuiya (aged 31 years)and son of Anam Uddin Borbhuiya were apprehended. Both are residents of Jamalpur which comes under the Dholai Police Station.

Another auto rickshaw with registration AS-11-DC-2048 was found carrying another 160 kilos of the product. Abdul Mannan Mazumder (21) son of Fakhar Uddin Mozumdar, Mashuk Uddin Laskar(23) son of Rafique Ahmed Laskar and Faruk Ahamed Barbhuiyan (28) son of Nur Uddin Borbhuiya were apprehended. They belong to Jamalpur and Bornarayanpur under Dholai PS.

One more auto rickshaw with registration number AS-11-C-5305 was found carrying another 200 kilos. Kamal Hossain Laskar (20)son of Moibur Rahman Laskar of Rajghat and Monuj Patel(46) son of Lt. Satyam Patel of Joydhanpur were apprehended with the vehicle.

Lastly, one 12-wheeler container truck bearing registration number NL-01-AD-6248 was captured with about 2000 kilos of the contraband material. The driver of the vehicle, Jubel Hussain (19) son of Ajmodh Ali of Kalain Natanpur under Kalain Police Station was apprehended.
