Over 28,000 in 79 villages hit by floods in Assam

Guwahati: With monsoons making a strong comeback in several parts of Assam, 28,462 persons have been affected due to floods in 79 villages across the districts of Dhemaji, Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Dibrugarh.

Due to torrential downpours, several rivers are flowing above the danger level mark. The rivers flowing above the danger level mark are:

Brahmaputra in Neamatighat (Jorhat),

Dikhow and Disang at Sivasagar,

Dhansiri in Golaghat's Numaligarh,

and

Jia Bharali in Sonitpur.

According to a bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ADSMA), in Dhemaji and Sivasagar, 3,634 hectares of agricultural land have been submerged underwater. Relief camps have been opened up in Dhemaji and Sivasagar where 953 people are taking shelter. Incessant rain in the upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh has caused flooding in areas of Assam like Dhemaji. Several rivers including Jia Dhal is now in spate and at least 50 villages are underwater.

Meanwhile, an embankment, along the left bank of the Dikhow river in Naziram, has been breached in Sivasagar district. In the same district, 14 Anganwadi Centres and 4 schools have also incurred damage due to the raging floods. 17 roads have been damaged in Dhemaji under the Dhemaji and Sissiborgaon Revenue Circle. Erosion is still making its presence felt in Dibrugarh, where 16 persons have been affected and a relief camp with 11 inmates has been opened up.

At least 10 persons have been killed in this year's first spate of floods, that had rendered thousands homeless in its initial run after the weakening of the Cyclone Amphan. With the monsoons approaching nearer, unceasing rains have once again returned in several districts, beginning yet another episode of 'floods versus Assam'.
