Over bridge market place in Dibrugarh lying unused for several years

DIBRUGARH: A market place for street vegetable vendors near the over bridge vegetable market has been lying unused for several years.

The market place was built by then Dibrugarh Municipal chairman Chandrakanta Baruah for the street vegetable vendors who used both sides of the road to sell their vegetables. But after several years, the place was not used. The vegetable vendors occupy both sides of the road every day which causes traffic snarls.

"We are facing problems while passing through the road because of the vegetable vendors. Already, a place was allocated for them then why don't they sit in that particular area to sell their vegetables? Why are they illegally occupying both sides of the road?" a resident asked. It has been alleged that some corrupt officials of DMB and some youths are running the illegal vegetable market in the area.

"After spending lakhs of rupees, the market shed was built for the street vegetable vendors but they didn't use the place allotted to them. The place is lying unutilized for the last several years," alleged a local resident. He further said, "School students face problems while passing through the road because the whole area is in an unhygienic condition." Meanwhile, the Dibrugarh Municipal Board has decided to create a specific vending zone for street vendors.
