TEZPUR: The first death anniversary of Padmashri Dr Sheela Borthakur prominent social worker, educator, littérateur and the founder president of the Sadou Axom Lekhika Samaroh Samity (SALSS) was observed at the District Library auditorium here on Sunday with daylong programmes. The programme was organized by Sadou Axom Lekhika Samaroh Samity in association with SALSS Tezpur Chapter.

Hundreds of members including the district secretary, president and advisor of the 'Sadou Axom Lekhika Samaroh Samity' from various parts of Assam participated in the event.

The programme started with the lighting of the earthen lamp by Nirupama Mishra and Mrinali Chetia. It was followed by paying floral tributes on a portrait of Dr Sheela Borthaku led by Sanjeeb Borthakur. Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were advisor Anjali Brahma, Kobita Rajguru, Dr Thunu Kalita, and the chief secretary of the Sadou Axom Lekhika Samaroh Samity and others.

Padmashri Dr. Sheela Borthakur was born in 1935 in Jorhat District but her early years were spent in Dhaka. She did her graduate studies at Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat.

After her marriage to Saranan Borthakur, she relocated to Tezpur and started her career as a teacher at Tezpur High School, but continued her studies. She secured master's and doctoral degrees Her thesis was on 'Social Change in Assam'.

Later, she joined Darrang College as a lecturer of Philosophy. She was also the founder Principal of the first women's college in Tezpur, Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Kanya Mahavidyalaya. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2008 for her contribution to society.

The inaugural program started with Monomoti Kurmi, President of Sadou Axom Lekhika Samaroh Samity, Tezpur Chapter delivering the welcome address. She extended the warm welcome towards dignitaries, members, Secretary and President of other districts and participants present in the program.

In the programme, a book 'Yogagragrami Padmashree Sheela Borthakur', -- a collection of articles and poems in the fond memory of Dr Borthakur, containing 558 pages -- was formally inaugurated by Dr Korabi Deka Hazarika, Former professor of Dibrugarh University. The open session was presided over by Dr Saru Caharia Bath, the president of the Sadou Axom Lekhika Samaroh Samity. Also present on the occasion were Mrinalini Devi, the vice president of Axom Xahitya Xabha as the chief guest and Krishna Das Nath, Dr Satish Bhattacharya as the guests of honour respectively.

Addressing the gathering, Mrinalini Devi appreciated the SALSS for organizing such an event to commemorate the death anniversary of the legendary personality of the state. She pointed out that the contribution of Padmashri Dr Sheela Borthakur was immense to the development of Assamese culture and literature and social life.
