LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has strongly opposed palm oil cultivation in Assam. In this connection, the workers and members of the party took to the street on Saturday with a stir and staged ‘Gana Dharna’ in front of the District Commissioner’s Office of Lakhimpur. Led by secretary in charge Karna Rai and assistant secretary Dhiren Kachari, the protesters shouted slogans to demand that palm oil cultivation be stopped in the state. By staging the same protest programme, the political party also demanded that the government of Assam control the price hike of essential commodities. Attending the protest programme, CPI State Council Assistant Secretary Arup Kalita criticized the government of Assam regarding the issues.
Later, the Lakhimpur district council of the CPI submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the District Commissioner. Through the memorandum, the political party further demanded the government stop syndicates, control corruption, distribute the land acquired for palm oil cultivation among landless families, strengthen the public distribution system, supply essential commodities through fair price shops, bring petro-products under GST, and stop launching smart meter for electricity tariffs.
